Anne Bonny and Mary Read: The Real Story of Female Pirates

Wednesday, March 97:00—8:00 PMVirtual

The pirates that roamed the Atlantic Ocean have long been a subject of interest - from Hollywood movies to scholarly works. However, one topic that is often overlooked is the role of female pirates. Led by Dr. Charlotte Carrington-Farmer, this talk will examine the women who went upon the account and sailed under the Jolly Roger in the Golden Age of Piracy. Using Anne Bonny and Mary Read as case studies, the talk will use primary sources to piece together the lives of two pioneering women, who challenged societal norms in the early eighteenth century.

Dr. Charlotte Carrington-Farmer is an Associate Professor of History at Roger Williams University, specializing in early American History. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in 2010. Dr. Carrington-Farmer has reviewed books for the Journal of American History, Connecticut History Review, History: Reviews of New Books, and the Equine History Collective. She has written pieces for The Junto, The Spectacle of Toleration, and Newport Historical Society blogs, and recorded podcasts for the Knowing Animals series.
