VIRTUAL: Beyond the Library - Hallyu! The Korean Wave

Join us for a Zoom event presented by Christina Yu Yu, MFA Boston’s Matsutaro Shoriki Chair, Art of Asia. Christina will delve into the vibrant history of Hallyu supported by images from the MFA’s currently featured “Hallyu! The Korean Wave” exhibition. Hear about the phenomenon of South Korea’s evolution toward becoming a leading cultural powerhouse in social and digital media. This discussion will trace a path through Korea’s cultural history and the synergy between government strategy and the innovation of cultural platforms. We hope you can join to hear about how Korean dramas, cinema, music, fashion, and other aspects of popular culture have contributed to the widespread popularity of the Hallyu Wave.

Christina Yu Yu, Ph.D. is the Matsutaro Shoriki Chair, Art of Asia at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFA). A specialist of Chinese art, she lead a team of curators in managing, exhibiting, and expanding the MFA's collection of more than 100,000 works from the Continent of Asia and the Islamic world. In addition to curatorial work, she crafts strategies for Asian art programs at the MFA. She is a frequent speaker and contributor to lectures, panel discussions, and publications on topics of Chinese art, curatorial practice, and the museum field.

Yu Yu attended Wellesley College for her undergraduate studies, and completed her M.A. at the Boston University and her Ph.D. at the University of Chicago. Prior to joining the MFA, she served as the inaugural Director of the Pacific Asia Museum at the University of Southern California and Assistant Curator, Chinese and Korean art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
