In this colorful presentation, Bill Gette will show you an amazing variety of late summer and early fall wildflowers that flourish in area fields, along forest edges, in wetlands, and beside country lanes. At this time of year, many flowers are still in blossom while others are developing their seeds. Bill encourages you to appreciate the colorful flowers but also to notice the fruits, including berries, capsules, pods, and silicles. In many ways, the fruits are as amazing and beautiful as the flowers from which they arose. Bill will open his presentation by showing you examples of flower parts (e.g., axil, petiole, sepal); review flower reproductive parts; and discuss flower types. All of these characteristics are key to wildflower identification.

Bill will then provide species accounts for over 60 wildflowers, including Dwarf Enchanter’s Nightshade, Allegheny Monkey-flower, Yellow Pine-sap, Boneset, Canada Burnet, Turtlehead, Cardinal  Flower, Nodding Ladies’-tresses, and many species of goldenrods For each species, Bill will discuss the origin of its scientific name (an amazing subject in itself), traditional uses, reproduction methods, and other interesting information.
